A song that I enjoy that has been covered by another band is Depeche Mode’s “Enjoy the Silence” which has been covered by the band Lacuna Coil. Both versions are similar yet there are some musical quality differences.
LYRICS
The lyrics in each version of this song are essentially the same. In the Lacuna Coil version there is a repetition of the line “enjoy the silence” during the last minute of the song, this CONTRASTS with the Depeche Mode version because the last minute is purely instrumental. The only other contrast between the two versions is that the vocals in Depeche Mode are male and in Lacuna Coil there are female vocals. Otherwise the two versions AFFINITY with each other due to the closeness of the actual lyrics.
MUSICAL QUALITY
The RHYTHM of these two songs seems to AFFINITY with each other due to the speed at which the lyrics are sung and the slowness of the instrumentation. The intensity of the Lacuna Coil version CONTRASTS with the Depeche Mode version by being slightly more INTENSE with its instrumentation. In the Lacuna Coil version the instrumentation is typical guitars, drums, and possibly a violin; where the Depeche Mode version contains guitars, drums, and synth sounds. In Lacuna Coil’s version the PITCH of the guitar is lower than in Depeche Mode’s version. Both versions are organized in the same format, Lacuna Coil basically did an almost exact copy of the original.
The version that I would say I like better would probably be the Lacuna Coil version, it has a heavier feel in the instrumentation and I think it goes well with the lyrics. I really like both versions but Depeche Mode's version has more of a techno sound to it that I don't always like.
Was looking for something half decent to comment on for bonus and stopped when I saw Depeche Mode. Really dig the original song, but not entirely wild on the Lacuna Coil version simply because of the vocals. Instrumental wise I think you're entirely correct in saying it's superior; the heavier sounds work extremely well. If I didn't like Depeche Mode's vocals so much I might be in total agreement with you.
ReplyDeleteAnyway, good choice overall. Didn't know many people covered Depeche Mode even though they are relatively known of.
